Here at Lulworth and Winfrith Primary School, we believe that writing is a fundamental life skill that empowers pupils to communicate ideas, express themselves confidently, and engage fully with the wider curriculum. Our Writing curriculum is designed to develop fluent, enthusiastic, and capable writers who can write with accuracy, creativity, and purpose.
Our aims for writing are to ensure that all pupils:
Become confident, independent writers
We aim to equip pupils with the skills and stamina needed to write effectively for a wide range of audiences and purposes. Through high-quality teaching, rich stimuli, and progressive skill development, pupils learn to craft writing that is imaginative, coherent, and thoughtful.
Develop secure transcription skills: handwriting, spelling, and punctuation
To ensure writing fluency, we prioritise the development of strong transcription skills:
By securing these foundational skills, children can focus more effectively on the composition and creativity of their writing.
Write for a clear purpose and with an understanding of audience
We ensure pupils understand why they are writing and who they are writing for. They learn to adapt style, tone, vocabulary, and structure across a broad range of genres—narrative, explanation, persuasion, poetry, and more. High-quality model texts, shared writing, and guided practice support pupils in developing purposeful, well-crafted writing.
Build a rich vocabulary and strong language awareness
Vocabulary sits at the heart of our English curriculum. Through exposure to ambitious texts, structured vocabulary instruction, and opportunities to speak and write using new language, pupils learn to express themselves with increasing precision and flair.
Develop clear, coherent composition skills
Across the school, pupils learn how to plan, draft, revise, and publish their writing. They are taught to reflect on their authorial choices and refine their work to improve clarity, cohesion, and impact. Collaborative editing, peer feedback, and teacher modelling play a central role in this process.
Make strong progress from their individual starting points
Our curriculum is inclusive and responsive. Teachers adapt instruction so that all pupils—including those with SEND—can access learning, make sustained progress, and develop confidence in their abilities as writers. Success is celebrated, and children are encouraged to see themselves as authors.
