English as an Additional Language (EAL)

  • EAL stands for English as an Additional Language and refers to any student who is learning and using English as a second language.
  • It is important to note that EAL is not considered a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND), as the challenges are related to language acquisition rather than a cognitive or developmental disability.

How our school supports EAL students

  • Classroom strategies: Teachers use methods like collaborative group work, enhanced speaking and listening opportunities, and visual supports like posters, gestures, and pictures.
  • Bilingual resources: Such as dictionaries, bilingual texts, and key word lists, as well as using online support programs.
  • New starter support: A new starter meeting with parents in their home language by using a translate function, if required, can help children settle more quickly.
  • Multicultural events: Celebrating diverse cultures by having links in topics and International days.
  • Learning from diversity: Valuing the multicultural community and using it to give children a broader understanding of the world and to teach them to respect differences.
