Welcome to Hambury Class (Year 5). Miss Shaw will be in class Monday to Tuesday and Miss Neaves will be in class Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.
We welcome parents and family members into the Hambury classroom Friday mornings from 8:45-9:00 to look at what the children have been learning at school. This is a lovely opportunity to look at books, the writing wall and displays with your child.
Hambury class have been very busy learning about World War 2, with our trip to the tank museum last term and enjoying our class text; Goodnight Mister Tom. You can enjoy some of our creative writing on this topic as it is displayed on our writing wall. We also had fun painting pictures which portray ‘The Blitz’ and writing a first person recount to describe what it would have been like.
This term we are looking forward to exploring many European countries, including the culture and climate of particular countries. Our class texts are about explorations which we will use creatively to teach them the different: reading, writing and language techniques needed. They draft their writing in their books; editing and improving it before it is displayed on our writing wall.
Our PE lessons will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons but we would appreciate it if your child could have their full PE kit in school every day (school PE shirt and shorts, socks and trainers, tracksuits for outside) as there may be chances throughout the week to participate in sports activities both inside and outside. Please remember that long hair needs to be tied up and ear-rings removed.
Water and snacks
We would ask that you provide your child with a named water bottle, this way pupils have access to water all day. Please include a healthy snack in your child’s lunch box if they need something to keep them going until lunch. If you would like your child to have milk please contact the office for the appropriate forms.
Homework will be set on a Thursday and will be due in the following Wednesday please. They will be set an English and Maths task linked to what they have been learning that week.
The children will be following the ‘Big Spellings’ scheme and throughout the year they will be assessed to determine which word list they will be given. Every morning at school they will complete different activities using these words and then tested on a Friday.
They will be reminded to change their own reading book each week. They will all take part in guided reading sessions each week and be heard individually by an adult as frequently as possible. Reading at home aloud to an adult is very important for developing their fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills. Every Wednesday, the children will earn a sticker on their smiley chart and an extra treat if an adult signs to confirm they have read at home at least 3 times the previous week.
